OPHS football team celebrates new turf system with ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday, September 9, 2011
OAK PARK, California (September 10, 2011) - Oak Park High School football will kick off its home opener with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday, September 9 at 7:00 p.m. to celebrate the completion of Eagle Stadium’s new multi-purpose Matrix synthetic turf system installed last month by Hellas Sports Construction.
The new full-sized, 89,500 square foot field features the advanced Matrix Turf system, which includes game lines for football, soccer and lacrosse. Designed to handle the rigorous play of high school athletics, Matrix also offers the look and feel of natural grass – something Oak Park students have not seen in the past.
“Our field condition prior to the Matrix turf installation was poor,” said Dr. Tony Knight, superintendent at Oak Park Unified School District. “The constant replacements of new sod and the cost to the district to maintain a terrible field was unacceptable. We wanted to improve the facilities for our students.”
The Matrix system has been utilized by numerous high-profile clients including the Cowboys Stadium and is the turf industry’s paramount product. It is comprised of two monofilament (spinneret) yarns that are manufactured in different sizes, shapes and colors. This configuration creates the best traction and system stability possible, and under stadium
lighting the color combination provides excellent light deflection. The backing and high strength coating provides an unparalleled tuft bind. Its durability and playability is highly superior. The public school, which provides college preparatory classes for grades 9-12, and is one of the highest ranked schools in academics in California, selected Hellas as their contractor
because “they offered a superior, proven product and we appreciated that the project was a complete package,” said Knight.
That package included site work, sub base construction, drainage and installation of advanced Matrix turf system. “The new field will make our flagship high school even more attractive and hopefully encourage more of our students to become engaged in the athletic program,” said Knight.
Matrix turf has been utilized for several field renovations in California including Orange Glen High School, Santa Monica High School, San Pasqual High School, The Language Academy and Escondido High School, along with numerous collegiate fields and professional stadiums across the nation.
