UNC Charlotte football program opens 2013 season on the new Matrix® turf system by Hellas Sports Construction.
AUSTIN, TEXAS (March 2, 2012) - Excitement is in the air as the Charlotte 49ers football program returns to the gridiron for the first time since 1948. Fittingly the innovative Matrix® synthetic turf system by Hellas Sports Construction has been selected as their surface of choice.
Headquartered in Austin, Texas, Hellas was chosen by UNC Charlotte because of its extensive football credentials and the ability to handle the entire project, from site work through turf installation and after sales service, according to Cass Ferguson, Director of Athletic Facilities and Event Operations for the Charlotte 49ers.
“Hellas Construction has the reputation for building quality football fields at the collegiate level and in the state of Texas where they know something about football,” said Ferguson. “Everything from the sub-base and drainage to the installation of the turf will be handled by Hellas.”
The new full-sized, 97,712 square foot field will feature the patented Matrix system with alternating panels of light and dark green turf every five yards. Utilized by numerous high-profile clients such as Dallas Cowboys Stadium, the Cotton Bowl, Baylor University, Idaho State, the Alamodome, and Northern Arizona University, Matrix turf is comprised of two monofilament (spinneret) yarns that are manufactured in different sizes and colors. This configuration creates the best traction and system stability possible, and under stadium lights, the color combination provides exceptional light deflection. The environmentally friendly backing and high strength coating provides an unparalleled tuft bind. Its durability and playability is highly superior to other turf products available in the market.
“The Matrix turf will give us the opportunity to expand the usage of our facilities, be it different sports or different events, due to the amount of wear and tear it can sustain. The field is a part of a beautiful facility that so many people have worked hard to bring back to UNC Charlotte.”
Recently named the McColl-Richardson Field, the Charlotte 49ers on-campus 15,000-seat stadium is currently under construction and will be completed in August of 2012. The 49ers will begin NCAA play at home on Aug. 31, 2013 to begin the 11-game season as a Football Championship Subdivision independent.
