About
Cowboys Stadium’s Matrix Turf is beginning converted and conditioned for the collegiate match-up between Texas A&M and the University of Oklahoma.
ARLINGTON, Texas (January 3, 2013) - The AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic is just around the corner and this year’s game is definitely one for the books. SEC newcomer Texas A&M, led by Heisman Trophy winner, Johnny Manziel takes on the #2 football team in the Big 12 Conference – the University of Oklahoma. This match-up will demand attention. A&M was, prior to the 2012 season, a member of the Big 12 Conference. Add to that, the game is taking place at one of the most iconic football stadiums in the world and being played on one of finest artificial grass systems available: Matrix Turf.
The SoftTop™ Matrix Turf field at Cowboys Stadium is one of only a handful of installations capable of being converted for different sports, like American football and soccer, and for different teams – the Dallas Cowboys play every home game on Matrix Turf, and the field system is being replaced with the AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic collegiate field this week.
Hellas Sports Construction’s patented SoftTop roll-up system requires about 30 hours to remove and replace the Matrix Turf field. After the field is positioned and secured, Hellas crews condition the surface using gently oscillating brushes on the surface while simultaneously infusing the field with REALFILL™ – Hellas Sports Construction’s patented infill system.
“The oscillating brushes are slowly passed across the field at different angles,” explains Reed J. Seaton, President and CEO of Hellas Sports Construction. “They ‘wake up’ the fibers and make the fibers look and play like natural grass; adding REALFILL holds the fibers in place and makes the field safer for athletes.”
“We plan to spend two-to-three days conditioning the field, preparing it for the Cotton Bowl,” said Bruce V. Layman, Vice President of Hellas Sports Construction’s Turf Division. “Our team will stay on site as long as it takes to ensure the field is safe and ready to play.”
The 77th AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic takes place at Cowboys Stadium on January 4, 2013 at 7:00 p.m., Central Standard Time.
