U.S. Soccer Foundation Awards Ten Communities With Soccer Grants
May 14, 2014
WASHINGTON, D.C. (May 14, 2014) – The U.S. Soccer Foundation, the major charitable arm of soccer in the United States, today announced the 2014 Grant Recipients for the Safe Places to Play Program. The program seeks to build field spaces in underserved areas in order to provide safe places for children to play. In this year’s first round, ten communities were announced as part of the selected grantees.
Hellas Construction, the Foundation’s field construction and synthetic turf partner, will provide the Matrix® Turf system on four projects. The fields will serve multiple organizations providing soccer fields to over 4,000 children and other users.
The grantees include:
- Borough of Paramus – The East Brook Middle School turf field will be a multi-sport soccer/lacrosse field located in Pittsfield, MA.
- City of Bayonne – A new synthetic turf field at the Veteran’s Stadium as part of an incentive by the Bayonne Youth Soccer Association (BYSA) to promote soccer in the City of Bayonne, NJ.
- City of Downey Parks and Recreation – The Discovery Sports Complex located in Downey, CA is one of the city’s most highly-used public parks and creates an ideal site to build and install two synthetic turf soccer fields to meet the community’s growing demand for both recreational and competitive soccer programming.
- WestSound FC – The two fields will be located in Silverdale, WA with one field being planned for only soccer, while the other is planned for rugby and lacrosse. The fields will be used by the Olympic College men’s and women’s soccer teams, the area youth soccer clubs and area adult teams.
"Hellas is excited to see the grants process at work and get started building fields for the soccer community in these areas,” said Reed J. Seaton, President and CEO of Hellas Construction, Inc.
