SOUTH KITSAP HIGH SCHOOL GETS SYNTHETIC TURF WITH LOCAL DONORS

South Kitsap School District selects Hellas Construction as Design-Build Partner

Port Orchard, WA (May 20, 2015) — Representatives of South Kitsap School District announced at the May 19th school board meeting that the construction and installation of a Matrix® synthetic turf field will break ground June 15th at South Kitsap High School thanks to two local donors and Hellas’ Design-Build capabilities and AHBL Engineers.

The School District selected the Matrix® Turf system with Geo Plus – all organic infill, making it the first project of its kind for a high school in the state of Washington. Geo Plus infill will enhance playing characteristics and the resemblance of natural grass and is made from 100% environmentally friendly materials, providing superior biomechanics: excellent footing, traction, and shock absorption for athletes and players. The Geo Plus infill is similar to natural soil and is less spongy and bouncy in comparison to rubber infill. Under the turf, Hellas will install a Cushdrain® pad that improves shock absorption (G-Max), drainage, and planarity of the field.

According to Chris Lemke, South Kitsap School Board President, Kitsap Bank has committed $504,000 toward the renovation of the South Kitsap High School athletic field; while a $150,000 donation from Debbie and Wayne Macomber will support track improvements. Kitsap Bank’s Vice Chairwoman and majority owner, Helen Langer Smith, said, “I am so pleased to have the bank make this donation. In our Kitsap Bank family alone, hundreds of employees, and their families have benefitted from the South Kitsap educational system. It is our pleasure to invest in this facility, which will serve future generations.”

The Macomber’s funds are being donated in memory of their son, Dale Macomber, who died in 2011. “Dale was a graduate of South Kitsap High School and passionate about teaching, running, and helping kids with disabilities,” said Debbie. “Our family is excited about dedicating the track in his memory.” Dale was a member of the track team while at South Kitsap High School, lettering all four years. He continued running throughout college and later participated in many area fun runs and marathons. “Running was a huge part of Dale’s life,” Debbie said. “It means so much to know that we can help fuel this passion in future generations of South Kitsap students.”

The funding has helped the school to get the best in sports construction and surfacing from Hellas, who manufactures and installs its own products. “We are very proud to be part of a project with local support and enthusiasm,” said Reed J. Seaton, president and CEO of Hellas.
