About
Austin, TX (Aug 4, 2017) –
Mike Johnston Field at Legacy Stadium in Katy ISD is ready for football this fall, opening its inaugural season with its newly installed Matrix® Turf with Helix Technology. This is not Katy ISD’s first time to choose Hellas for their turf, it’s their ninth time. Just like a majority of school districts throughout the great State of Texas, Katy ISD has selected Hellas Construction time and again for its high-quality products, installation and timely delivery.
“Along with a great turf product and quality installation, Hellas once again provided timely design support and construction coordination,” said HKS Architects Principal and Senior Vice President Mark Vander Voort.
Hellas partnered with HKS Architects on the Legacy Stadium project. Hellas had previously worked with HKS on the Dallas Cowboy’s AT&T Stadium, in Arlington TX, where Hellas has previously installed the same Matrix Turf with Helix Technology.
“We look forward to working with Hellas again on future projects,” said Vander Voort.
The Matrix® Turf with Helix technology consists of twisted fibers of two different blade sizes and colors, offering enhanced playability, with fibers that bounces back quickly after use and prevents “splash out” of the infill material. The Matrix family of synthetic turf products offer quality, performance, and longevity that are unparalleled in the industry.
The district also chose the Cushdrain® pad, which is a monolithic, paved into place, elastic layer that goes under the turf and increases the shock absorption of the artificial turf system, resulting in a lower G-MAX, which means a safer playing surface with reduced concussions. The Cushdrain pad provides efficient drainage of the field after heavy rains and provides planarity that retains its form and position throughout three to four lifecycles of turf.
August 17th the district is planning a dedication event complete with bands, dance and cheer teams, football and soccer teams, along with school and city officials to celebrate the opening of the stadium. August 31st is the first game at the stadium featuring Taylor Mustangs hosting Foster Falcons.
Legacy Stadium’s Mike Johnston Field is named after the former Katy Tigers head football coach. Coach Johnston put Katy on the map with three State Championship wins during his 21-year career. The new stadium seats 12,000 and has a video board, one-story press box, restrooms, concessions, field house, coed training rooms, an EMT area, a police office, and a place for a Hall of Honor. With Rhodes Stadium right next door, Katy ISD now has a great set up for football playoffs, soccer tournaments, and band competitions. The district hopes to host football playoffs, marching band competitions, and soccer tournaments at the two-stadium complex.
Katy ISD’s eighth high school is being built now, Paetow High School, and scheduled to open Fall 2017. It will also be the 10th Katy ISD field with Hellas’ turf on its field.
Other Texas School districts choosing Hellas for multiple stadiums and fields projects include Anna ISD, Garland ISD, Ysleta ISD, Georgetown ISD, Round Rock ISD, Austin ISD, McKinney ISD, Frisco ISD, Cypress-Fairbanks ISD, El Paso ISD, Pflugerville ISD, Rockwall ISD, Wichita Falls ISD, Jourdanton ISD, Dripping Springs ISD, Arlington ISD, Wylie ISD, Irving ISD, Allen ISD, Midland ISD, Denton ISD, Coppell ISD, Grand Prairie ISD, Terrell ISD, Sunnyvale ISD, Mansfield ISD, San Angelo ISD, Ector County ISD, Laredo ISD, and Northeast ISD.
