(Jan 31, 2020) –
Hellas Construction completed installation of a top-of-the-line Matrix Helix® synthetic turf system at the historic Nathaniel Traz-Powell Stadium on January 30 ahead of the Big Game.
Originally opened in 1968, Nathaniel Traz-Powell Stadium now serves seven high school football teams. In its 52-year history, it has served as the gridiron for legions of developing football players. In fact, more NFL players played high school football at Traz-Powell Stadium than any other.
Teddy Bridgewater, New Orleans Saints quarterback who played football at the stadium, told Forbes, “My reaction to Traz getting renovated was a feeling of joy. Knowing the value of the stadium and the role it plays in producing high school athletes and hosting games in south Florida, it’s amazing that this renovation is taking place.”
The Matrix Helix field was installed by Hellas Construction crews. The Helix-shaped turf fibers feature Shape Memory Technology. The fibers are curled and heat-set during the manufacturing process, allowing each fiber to spring back to its original position and secure the turf’s infill, reducing splash-out of infill particles during play. Helix technology enhances the turf system’s resiliency, stability, and durability over time. The Matrix Helix synthetic turf system is also installed at the Miami Dolphins’ Indoor Practice Facility. Hellas Construction is an Official Partner of the Miami Dolphins.
Reed J. Seaton, Hellas Construction President and CEO, commented, “It is wonderful to see such tremendous community engagement in Miami, and we are proud to install the playing surface at Traz-Powell. It’s an iconic stadium that serves as the training ground for so many athletes in South Florida.”
The field is part of a larger eco-friendly stadium renovation. The surface incorporates infill derived from athletic footwear manufacturing scraps.
