CARROLLTON, TX (May 6, 2020) –
When students return to campus, the RL Turner High School Lions will step foot on a brand new synthetic turf field. Hellas Construction, based in Austin, is currently at the school building and installing the same turf system that is used by the Dallas Cowboys.
The Turner High School project is part of a strong investment that was approved by the Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD School Board. The project will upgrade athletic facilities district-wide. This project includes the ongoing work at Ranchview, Creekview, and Newman Smith High Schools.
“Through this investment, CFBISD is creating a home field experience on campus for students throughout the District,” said Dr. John Chapman III, CFBISD’s Superintendent.
Academic athletes participating in a range of school-sponsored and extracurricular activities will enjoy use of the new fields. The upgrades will touch Cheerleaders, Yell Leaders, Track and Field, Cross Country, PE, Band, and ROTC, in addition to Soccer and Football players.
Renee Putter, Athletic Director for Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD, said, “We wanted to invest in our student athletes. This multi-campus project will enable each school to cultivate a school spirit and deliver a home field advantage to virtually every student in the District.”
Hellas Construction will build the field and will install a Cushdrain® padding system under the field, which will create an extra layer of player protection for students. On top of the Cushdrain pad, Hellas will install the Matrix Helix™ synthetic turf system, which is also installed at AT&T Stadium. This turf system is also used by the Houston Texans, Miami Dolphins, and Jacksonville Jaguars and will soon be used by the Raiders, Chargers, and Rams. The D-Zones will be surfaced with both synthetic turf and epiQ Tracks® materials. The Turner High School field will prominently feature the Lions logo and school’s blue and white colors.
Juan Gomez, Boys Head Soccer Coach, predicted, “We are going to have a great season on the new turf field. It’s something to rally around.”
The Girls Head Soccer Coach, Krystal Mikeska, agreed. She said, “The Lions will have place to come together and get into the team spirit.”
By the first week in July, the field will be complete.
Michael Farda, RL Turner High School’s Athletic Coordinator and Head Football Coach, said, “When the Lions take the field, it will mean so much to have their very own field. So many of our kids will get to use it, and it will be such a great way to resume on-campus life and activities.”
